Asexual reproduction Sexual reproduction
(a) Involves only one parent
(b) Gametes are not produced
(c) No fertilization and zygote formation
(d) Meiosis does not occur at any time during reproduction
(i) Often involves two parents
(ii) Gametes are produced
(iii)Fertilisation and zygote formation is observed.
(iv) Meiosis occurs at the time of gamete formation

During sexual reproduction two types of gametes fuse. Although the gametes contain the same number of chromosomes, their DNA is not identical. This situation generates variations among the offsprings.

In sexual reproduction we can find more variations when compared to asexual mode of reproduction.

Following are the reasons for that

  • Gene pool are contributed by two parents
  • Crossing over that occur during meiosis results in more variation
  • DNA replication also contributes for the variation
