The two major reasons for the appearance of variation among the progeny formed by sexual reproduction are :

(1) Crossing over is the process in which DNA is exchanged between the homologous chromosomes during meiosis, This causes variation in the progeny.

(2) The progeny formed due to sexual reproduction has characteristics from the mother as well as the father. Hence because of this the characteristics differ and result in variation.
