The Gram-positive bacteria show presence of peptidoglycan layer in the cell wall and Gram-negative bacteria show presence of murein in the cell wall. The technique used for differentiating bacterial cells is Gram staining. [Note: Murein is similar to peptidoglycan in structure and function. It is present in the cell walls of archaebacteria.
