Assign a reason for each of the following statements:
(i) Ammonia is a stronger base than phosphine.
(ii) Sulphur in vapour state exhibits a paramagnetic behaviour.
(i) As the atomic size of nitrogen is smaller than phosphorus, therefore electron density on nitrogen atom is higher than that on phosphorus atom. Consequently the tendency of N in NH3 to donate its lone pair of electrons is much higher than that of P in PH3 . Thus, ammonia is stronger base than phosphine.
(ii) In vapour state sulphur partly exists as S2 molecule which has two unpaired electrons in the antibonding π* orbitals like O2 and, hence exhibits paramagnetic behaviour.
