The Intellectual Property Appellate Board (IPAB) has ordered the Chennai-based Geographical Indications Registry (GIR) to issue a ‘Geographical Indication’ tag for basmati rice.
The GI tag is issued to basmati rice varieties grown in 7 states in the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) on the foothills of the Himalayas. Hence, statement B is correct.
These 7 states are Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, parts of Uttar Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.
The GI tag will help to preserve the unique identity of the aromatic basmati rice in the international markets.
India is the largest producer and exporter of Basmati rice in the world.
India’s basmati rice is exported to various Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Iraq, and Kuwait.
The process to allocate the GI tag for the 7 states was initiated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
