Option 3 : Rs. 80
Average = (sum of elements)/(number of elements)
Let the money spent by fifth student be Rs. M and average money spent by all five students be N.
Given,
Four of them spent Rs. 100 on their shopping
Total amount of money spent by four students = 4 × 100 = 400
Total amount of money spent by four students is Rs. 400.
Total amount of money spent by all five students = 400 + M
Average money spent by all five students = total amount of money spent by all five students/ 5
⇒ N = (400 + M)/5
Given,
And fifth student spent Rs. 16 less than the average expenditure of all the five -
⇒ M = N - 16
⇒ N = M + 16
Then,
⇒ (M + 16) = (400 + M)/5
⇒ 5M + 80 = 400 + M
⇒ 4M = 400 - 80
⇒ 4M = 320
⇒ M = 80
∴ Money spent by fifth student is Rs. 80.
