Option 1 : 21

Given: Rajiv scored 20% marks in an exam and failed by 11 marks.

If he scored 50% marks, then he gets 4 marks more than passing marks.

Solution:

Let the total marks in the exam be ‘x’

Passing marks = 20% of x + 11 = 0.2x + 11

Also, Passing marks = 50% of x – 4 = 0.5x – 4

⇒ 0.5x – 4 = 0.2x + 11

⇒ 0.5x – 0.2x = 11 + 4

⇒ 0.3x = 15

⇒ x = 15/0.3 = 50

∴ Passing marks = 0.2(50) + 11 = 10 + 11 = 21
